• Operators using artificial lift solutions must determine the method that best aligns project economics with lift system performance to realize the full production potential of an oil or gas field. To address the need for a system that can adapt to challenging lift situations, including high sand production, horizontal or directional applications, and high-viscosity oil wells, NOV has perfected a line of progressing cavity pumps (PCPs).

Our PCPs were used by YPF in the Manantiales Behr Field in Argentina. The PCPs were ideal to address the various challenges of producing this field, and YPF worked with us to implement a full-scale rental and maintenance solution for the wells, which at the time included about 180 pumps. Our basic objective when designing and refining PCPs was to balance fluid production rates with the mechanical performance capabilities of the equipment to achieve optimal service life and deliver long-term value in the field. Though the expected mean time between failures is two years, this PCP system has been in place since 2009 and has continually produced at high efficiency without incident. We estimate that YPF has saved at least two rig interventions on this particular well, resulting in substantially reduced downtime and increased production.

Due to such consistently high performance, our PCPs became YPF’s preferred option for artificial lift wells in the region. To learn more about this project, read our full feature in E&P here.
